Background Information

St .Joseph’s technical institute is a diocesan private run institution situated in Fort Portal
municipality Kabalore District Western region of Uganda.
It started in1922 training apprentice students in carpentry and joinery. (Learning through
practice) on Virika Hill.
In 1981The Institute was registered with the ministry of education and sports as a private
technical Institute (PTS/S.5.)
In 2016, the institute became an institute of Uganda Martyrs University Fort Portal campus but
maintained all its BTVET programs.
It has a Uganda Business and Technical Examinations Board (UBTEB) CENTER NUMBER
UBT075, and DIT assessment centre NUMBER UVQF/134.
It trains students in the following craft courses:

Entry requirements: Senior four leavers who passed science subjects

1. National Certificate in Mechanical Engineering
2. National Certificate in Motor vehicle Mechanics
3. National Certificate in Electrical Installation systems and maintenance
4. National Certificate in Wood work Technology/Carpentry and Joinery
5. National Certificate in Building and construction
6. National Certificate in Plumbing
7. National Certificate in Fashion and Design/Tailoring

Uganda junior technical certificate

Entry requirements: Primary seven leavers with aggregates between 4 and 28

1. Car maintenance and fitting
2. Bricklaying and concrete practice
3. Carpentry and joinery
4. Tailoring and garment cutting

Apprentice courses

Entry requirements: Any level of education but able to read and write.

1. Motor vehicle mechanics 

2. Brick laying and concreting practice

 3. Electrical Installation

 4. Carpentry and joinery

 5. Tailoring (modular training) 3months to 1 year 

6. Hair dressing(modular training) 3months to 1 year
